Menu / template detection

Why one error in your menu is counted only once.

On a site, the menu, header or footer is added to every page. If there is a single broken or redirecting link in these areas, it looks like a separate issue on every page. In reality they are a single issue fixed in one place. The report tells these apart.

#How is it detected?

Pages that link to a broken or redirecting internal link target are grouped by target. A target counts as menu / template if it meets both of these conditions:

  • At least 10 pages link to the target (a few pages on a small site are not proof of a template).
  • These pages make up at least 80% of the crawled HTML pages.

#How does it look in the report?

  • In the Issues tab, broken and redirecting links are listed by target; those coming from a template are marked with a “menu / template” badge and the note “Fixed in one place: the site's menu, header or footer”.
  • The template target is counted once in the error and warning counts and appears as a site-wide finding named “Broken link in menu/template” or “Link to a redirect in menu/template”.
  • In the health score, a broken target coming from a template affects the score as much as a single faulty page (Health score).
  • Page records are not deleted: which pages it appears on is still available per page in the Pages tab and in the CSV and Excel exports.
  • In the to-do list (.md), a [menu/template: …] note is added to the target line.
